Last night before a packed house in the very spot where John McCain will accept his party’s nomination Barack Obama clinched the Democratic nomination. After scoring impressive victories across the nation and engaging millions of new voters Barack Obama secured the requisite number of delegates to become the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party.
In his speech he paid great respect to Senator Hillary Clinton – who along with Obama - has campaigned in 54 primaries and caucuses since the start of the season in Iowa. This historic primary was waged by two of the most qualified candidates in recent history. The contests were marked by over 35 million democrats participating in primaries and caucuses – the largest number in history.
“Now is the time for our Party to come together with Barack Obama as our standard bearer and take the fight to the Republicans,” said Brian Wahby, St. Louis’ Democratic Party Chairman to over 400 people who gathered for St. Louis’ Obama watch party.

Democrats from all part of our city gathered last night to take the next step in seating the Missouri Delegation to the Democratic National committee in Denver. Although the final numbers are not in, it appears that nearly 700 Democrats came out to participate in our Caucuses. To all that came out - thanks!

In what many called a turning point in the contest for the Presidential nomination Missouri Democrats delivered the majority of their votes to Illinois Senator Barack Obama. Leading the State was the City of St. Louis giving Obama over 70% of the votes cast in the City. Adding to those numbers, Barack Obama received nearly 62% of the Democratic vote in St. Louis County.
Perhaps the best news for CityDems from February 5th was that nearly 235,000 more Democrats than Republicans voted in the Missouri Primary

JEFFERSON CITY — A top Republican leader expects 2008 to be a rough election year for his party.
House Speaker Rod Jetton (R-Marble Hill) is the one who pushed for Republicans to elect a Speaker-designate. The House Republican Caucus elected Representative Ron Richard (R-Joplin), who now will have a year to learn the ropes from Jetton so he will be ready to become Speaker in 2009, after the November 2008 elections.
